Easy Steps to Create a Panorama or to Stitch a Photo

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

Have you even come across a building where its size is too big and you are unable to get a full shot of it on a single take? Why not take multiple photos of it and stitch them together using Adobe Photoshop. This tutorial below is for those using the CS4 version of Photoshop.

First, get a few shots of different parts of the building. Be sure to retain at least 30% of the view of the previous shot so that Photoshop will be able to get stitch the photo accurately. Below is an example of 3 photos of the Kuala Lumpur Twin Tower taken at 3 different sections of the building. These images are captured using the same focal length.

Once you’ve gotten at least 2 or more pictures, open up all those photos using Photoshop. An example is shown below.

Next, click on File > Automate > Photomerge.

You will then end up with the screen below and click on Add Open Files to get the resulted screen.

Choose all of the images and click OK. It will take a while for Photoshop to process the photos. You will then get something like this. At the Layers panel, choose all of the layers available and click on Flatten Image.

You can then crop the photo the way you want it. The result of the photo we’ve used here on this tutorial is shown below. Experiment with it until you’ve get your desired result. Panorama also work the same way only you take more photos horizontally instead of vertically.

All of this would only take a maximum of 5 minutes although editing the picture further may take some more time.
